PUERTO MADRYN

Its touristic offers and strategic location are undeniable and it is the main tourism services centre in east Patagonia. It is also the entrance door to Península Valdés, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1999.

FOUNDED IN 1865

Puerto Madryn city was founded in 1865 when the first Welsh settlers arrived.

The first working settlement was created when the railway was built, in June 1889. It aimed to transport the settlers farming production to the whole valley.

ALUAR ALUMINUN PLANT

Another event that fostered its growth was the establishment of ALUAR Aluminum Plant in 1971. At that time, the population was about 6500 habitants; from the moment ALUAR got established, the population started increasing continuously, and this consolidated the city as a touristic centre.

DIVING NATIONAL CITY

Our main incomes are boosted by aluminum production, fishing activity and tourism. This last activity was born in the ’60, when the Submarine Tourism Promotor Committee of Bahía Nueva was created. It aimed to plan and build artificial reefs inside San José and Nuevo gulfs, places currently visited by tourists to experience the traditional submarine baptism in this distinguished Diving National City.
