Taking towards the south of the city by Boulevard Alte. Brown, almost at the end of the avenue, is the area of Point Caves, historic site and base of the first Welsh settlement in Chubut, these caves, dug by settlers, were the first homes in Puerto Madryn and one of the oldest in colonized Patagonia.
Just a few meters away and going up the boulevard, you will find the monument to the Tehuelche Indian, a place that offers an outstanding panoramic view of the Nuevo Gulf and the city with its beaches and docks.
150 meters away is the Ecocentro Puerto Madryn, dedicated to the interpretation of marine ecosystems and the development of educational, scientific and cultural activities.
Continuing the route to the south -14 km of gravel- and after paying the entrance fee to the Punta Loma Protected Area, you access a viewpoint located on a cliff overlooking the Nuevo Gulf from where you can see the sea lion colony and the colony of cormorants. Also within the protected area you can walk a flora interpretation trail. The area can be visited throughout the year, taking into account the low tide times.
Just 3 km to the south, you reach Cerro Avanzado, a sedimentary formation millions of years old that preserves fossil remains of oysters and marine vertebrates among its geological strata. On this tour it is also possible to stop at the different beaches of the gulf: Playa del Pozo, Playa Paraná, Punta Este and Playa Kaiser. As an alternative to conventional excursions, there are several companies that organize outings with combined activities.
