Walking among penguins is one of the most popular excursions for nature lovers. The continental colonies of Magellanic penguins in Península Valdes and Punta Tombo are the largest in the world.

PNA Punta Tombo

Punta Tombo, located 180 km south of Puerto Madryn, is one of the largest continental reserves of Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus).

Peninsula Valdes PNA

Península Valdés today houses the largest reproductive colony of Magellanic Penguins in the world.

This could be due to the sustained increase in the number of reproductive adults that the colony has had during the last 10 years, who feed on anchovies during the reproductive stage, an abundant and predictable resource in space and time.

The nests are located on the shores of the San Matías Gulf from Estancia San Lorenzo to Punta Norte, as well as the entire coast and islands of Caleta Valdés.

Crossing the Valdés Peninsula from the middle and towards the north we can find penguins in Punta Cantor, where there is a public viewpoint with an exceptional view of Caleta Valdés. Then along the path that borders the coast we arrive at Punta Norte where the largest concentration of Magellanic penguins is found. We can enter the continental colony that has grown the most in recent years through Estancia San Lorenzo.

Mouth of the Gulf / Punta Ninfas

We can also see penguins at the entrance to the Nuevo Gulf, there is a small colony in constant growth. It is the closest to the city, located just 70 km from Madryn, and is within Estancia El Pedral.
